Moles

Michigan is home to two types of moles: the eastern mole and the star-nosed mole. The eastern mole is the most common mole active in Michigan.

Contrary to popular belief, the presence of moles in your yard is not an indication that you have a large grub problem. Earthworms make up about 95 percent of a mole’s diet, with grubs and other insects making up a much smaller portion.

Moles have a few primary tunnels they use regularly and may have many secondary tunnels that they use for foraging. Mole activity is most noticeable in the spring and fall when the soil is moist and easier for the moles to excavate. However, moles are active year-round.

Moles can cause considerable lawn damage, leaving mole hills and often causing brown grass-less streaks throughout the lawn. Moles can cause a lot of damage in a relatively short period of time, as they can dig up to 18 feet per hour.

How we Control Moles

Our four step process to control the moles on your property.

1

INSPECTION

The presence of moles is very apparent. Moles often leave hills and usually cause brown grass-less streaks throughout the lawn. Moles typically have a main “run”. Our technicians will evaluate your turf and will discuss our treatment recommendation.

2

ASSESSMENT

After our initial inspection, our technicians will assess all reasonable solutions and will review the approach we’re recommending to resolve the issue. Our technicians will go over the scope of our service and will answer any questions you may have regarding the removal of the moles.

3

BAITING OR TRAPPING

Depending on the mole issue at your location, we offer trapping and baiting services. However, baiting is the preferred method for removing the moles on your property. Baits are placed underground in the cavities that the moles have excavated. The baits resemble earthworms, which is their primary food source. Trapping is another option we can use, however we typically use traps only as a supplement  to the baiting program.

4

FOLLOW UP SERVICES

Follow up services are scheduled to re-bait the runs or to check the traps. We may need to flag or mark the runs to identify activity on the follow-up services. Follow up service visits are typically spaced one week apart.

Mole Habitats on Your Property

Moles are only subterranean and live exclusively in your soil. They create complex tunnels, and as a result, can cause considerable damage.

Schedule for Services

Moles do not hibernate in the winter, however the colder weather does have an effect on the service offerings we provide for mole removal. As a result, Regal Pest Control offers mole removal services, typically, from April through October in Southeast Michigan. This schedule may vary slightly due to the weather, which again dictates our ability to conduct the mole services we offer.

The amount of time depends on whether you have an attic, a crawlspace (if it’s dirt or paved) and other factors. Typically, inspections for homes under 2,500 sq ft take a about one hour. Add about a 20 minutes or so for each additional 1,000 sq ft.

If we do find activity, the inspection time will likely increase.
