FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Carpenter bees resemble bumble bees, however carpenter bees have shiny, hairless abdomens. Carpenter ants will make darting movements which also distinguish them from bumblebees.
Carpenter bee males (the bees that guard the nests) are very aggressive and will dart at you if you get too close. However, they do not have stingers and will typically keep a distance from you as a result. Females can sting, but it is very rare. You would almost have to handle a female carpenter bee to get stung.
Carpenter bees nest in wood. Common areas are the undersides of handrails on decks (and other areas around the deck), wood playscapes and wood trim on the home. Carpenter bee holes are symmetrical and are usually about 1/4″ in diameter. There sometimes will be stains under the holes from the bees creating the nest/cavity. The holes can be as much as a few feet deep and eggs are stacked like tennis balls at the base of the cavity.
